Ottawa is Canada’s fourth-largest city. Hi, welcome to watchmojo.com. I’m your host Christine. And today, we’ll continue our travel series with a look at Canada’s capital.
Located in the Ottawa Valley. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It was chosen1 as such by Queen Victoria in 1857 for its strategic1 location as a compromise1 between 2 colonies and their French and English population.
The climate1 in Ottawa has a varied <acronym title="éventail">range</acronym> in temperatures with the record1 high being 100°F. The city receives roughly1 93 inches of snow annually between mid-December and early April. Daytime temperatures in January <acronym title="moyenne">average</acronym> 13°F, average temperatures in July are 80°F with high humidity1 being an irritating <acronym title="problème">issue</acronym>.
Attracting approximately 3 million visitors each year, Ottawa’s Parliament Hill is home to Canada’s <acronym title="monument">landmark</acronym> government1ceux1 buildings. The best known of the Parliament buildings is the Centre Block which include the Peace1 Tower1, a national symbol. Inside the Centre Block is the House of Commons and Senate chambers and the library of parliament. The entire1 parliamentary <acronym title="composé">compound</acronym> measures 112,360 square miles.
The Rideau Canal connects Ottawa on the Ottawa River to Kingston on Lake Ontario1. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site1 in 2007, the canal1 measures on 126 miles long. Today, boats tours1 of the canal are offered and recreational boaters use it to travel between Ottawa and Kingston.
<acronym title="exposer en vitrine">Showcasing</acronym> over 3 million tulips1, Ottawa plants more of the flower <acronym title="par habitant (par tête)">per capita</acronym> than any other city. Tulip bulbs1 were a gift from the Dutch royal family in 19451 after Canada <acronym title="protégé">sheltered</acronym> their princess during the second World War1 and played a large part in liberating the Netherlands1.
Ottawa’s Canadian Museum1 of the Civilization is Canada’s most visited museum and traces over 1000 years of Canadian history. The National Gallery of Canada holds1 the world’s most <acronym title="complète">comprehensive</acronym> collection of Canadian and Inuit art. Ottawa is also home to the world’s largest collection of <acronym title="haie">hedge</acronym> <acronym title="labyrinthe">mazes</acronym> with Saunders Farm, housing 9 larges mazes and a series of puzzle mazes.
