The monument is shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, five hundred and fifty-five feet high and averages thirty to forty miles visibility in clear weather.
The monument is among the tallest masonry structures, it was designed by Robert Mills, a prominent American architect of the 1840s. The actual construction of the monument began in 1848, but was not completed until eighteen eighty-four, almost thirty years after the architect's death.
At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in the world. It is still the tallest building in Washington DC.
